Basics of Alchemy - Second Class - Period Five - Monday, 9/8
As today was mostly going to be a lecture class, there hadn't been much of anything to set up. Abby Irene sat at the front of the class, leaning against her desk, and the students filed in as they would. There was nothing on their desks but a number of papers and nothing on the board for the moment. That would soon change, of course, as she launched into the lecture... but they should enjoy it for the meantime.

"I certainly hope you came into class today prepared for a bit of work. I know a few of you will have it somewhat easier for having been in my last class, but for all I know the others might have some passing familiarity with beastiaries which could provide them the same advantage. That said, let's dig into this, shall we? I promise, this should be the least explosive class of the semester."

[ocd coming up!]

Late-ish Sunday Night, Room 429
Ella was at her informal-non-party-thing, and Rikku was having a very long, very sucky kinda weekend.

This required a Reno. Possibly for updates, except if he hadn't talked to anybody, then she shouldn't tell him, so she'd evade like crazy and run for it. Or maybe just stick around for snuggles. She'd ... figure that one out. Okay.

Knock knock knock!

(for the reno, natch)

Town Hall, Monday
He'd made a few of the visits he'd needed to make already-- a few more were set to be relatively soon, and he needed to get a hold of Constable Fraser to discuss school security. Which made the previous week a productive week, and this one moreso.

And as such, of course, 'Mayor Summers' was on the phone with Irene Merryweather. "And I think we can manage security of the new section of the island if we adopt a new trooper deployment plan."

"So how's that paperwork coming, Nate?"

"As well as it should."

"You ever think maybe you need an assistant?"

"You can't come here right now, Irene."

A sigh. "I know." A pause. "So how is the job?"

"I'm having fun," Cable said, his mouth twitching in a slight smile.

"See," Irene said, "Now that isn't worrying in the least..."

Groovy Tunes; Monday [ 09/08. ]
Coming into work after class today, Chad was quiet.

True, Chad was always quiet, but this was a different kind of quiet, and even Prince Oscar Pedro seemed to notice it, following suit and not running around the store today so much as wandering around and taking a few naps, but always making sure to circle around to Chad and give a little reassuring rub against his leg.

Today's mix: Teddy

Groovy Tunes is open, and mellow.

Weekly Entertainment
Late by about, er, an hour at this point. I blame the football games; no, I'm not watching them, but the noise they generate in this house...

^_^

Anyway, thankfully this is a weekly thing so in that spirit:

Ever have a pup you wanted to app but you just couldn't figure out how to get them into the game without messing something up?

...I know I have Garion who's like that for me. And another pup I'm considering except for the possible language barrier (hi, world specific vocabulary of doooom!). Anyone else?

Fandom High Office, Monday, September 8th
When the staff arrived at the office this morning, it reeked of skunk vomit, seawater, and sand.

They promptly abandoned the office to the cleaning staff and took the day off to party in Annapolis.

They left the moose to deal with the paperwork.

Achievements in Engineering #2, Period 2 Monday

Today, the class was back inside a regular classroom, even though this one was a bit dark with the lights out and the shades pulled down. "Welcome! It's good to see that you're all back for another week," said Mike, grinning. "This week, we're going to be talking about the next achievement on our list, electricity. Oh, and just in case you guys need some more light, I've got something for you right here." He started passing out candles, one for each student.

"Believe it or not, folks, there was once a time where you needed a candle or some kind of oil lamp if you were out and about after sunset. That all changed when Thomas Edison perfected the incandescent light bulb. Problem is that you can't use a light bulb without the electricity to power it, so his next move was to develop an electricity distribution system to bring electrical powers to consumers. Edison favored a direct current system, but eventually the country adopted the alternating current system proposed by Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse. Thanks to their work, I can flip a switch over here on the wall and we don't need those candles anymore," said Mike, turning the overhead lights on.

"I'm sure the power systems that some of you have in the future are a lot more advanced than what we have here, but the point here is that without electricity, we wouldn't have lights or computers or any sort of modern appliance that you can imagine."

Library; Monday [ 09/08 ]
Blissfully oblivious of any misinformation that the weekends radio reports may have given, Cal came into the library, in a good mood although it was still early and he hadn't gotten through a lot of his coffee. He'd gotten back in the rhythm of his workout, he hadn't even smoked in probably about a week, and he might even...

...well, that last part he wouldn't think about. He didn't want to spoil the good wave he was riding on at the moment with thoughts that would eventually turn to self-doubt. After finding a book that looked pretty good about the legendary Greek battles, he sat behind the desk, stuck his tongue out at the computer, and then kicked up his feet on the desk to enjoy his read.

Wellspring Arms & Meditation Centre: Monday
Worf had arrived early to make sure that everything was in proper order. Unfortunately there were few yoga magazines that were out of placed and apparently marked by some random fashion that made no sense to him.

So Worf neatly stacked them in the corner and made sure that the rest of the store was ready for customers.

Care for Magical Creatures; Monday, Period One; September 08.
As the students came into the Danger Shop, they would find it exactly as it was last week, with one big change. The desks were no longer in front of all the cushiony pillows for sitting. No, they were laying in a heap in a corner of the room, hosting a crackling and pleasant fire.

It was best not to ask.

The Art of War, Week #2 [Period 3, Monday]
"Good morning, students," Ghanima said as the class started.  "Welcome back, I'm glad to see I did not frighten any of you off.  Today we are starting with the first chapter, 'Laying Plans.'"

"War."  Ghanima surveyed them sharply, making sure she had everyone's full attention.  "The term calls to mind battlefields and generals.  The most successful battles, however, are not fought with soldiers, but behind closed doors with words.  They are the battles you never hear about, because there is no glory to them."

"There is the war of the sexes, the war between companies and corporations, economic wars, ideological wars, political wars, and wars between the social classes, all of which tend to start on a more basic level, and escalate to the stereotype.  Whether you are wooing a romantic partner or a business rival, or meeting an enemy with your weapon drawn, the same principals hold true."

All War is Based on Deception )

"Now, I'd like you to pair up, and discuss which of the five constant factors you feel to be the most important, and why."

[OOC:  For those of you reading along at home, here's a condensed version of Art of War.  *cuddles her copy*  Please wait for the OCD to go up, before you run wild!]

Physics, Monday, Class #2, Period 4
Sam was smiling as the students wandered, in, once again nursing a large cup of coffee. "First, I'd like to welcome you all back to class. For those of you who aren't fulfilled with only one physics class a week, I'd like to announce that there's a science lab that will be open once a week for anything you'd like to do, science-wise, barring intentional explosions or things that would be more appropriately conducted in the Danger Room Shop. This will probably be on Saturdays. It's a good place to work on and test your pumpkin chuckers before the final exam. Speaking of which, I'll need your pairings at the end of class, please."

It's perfectly safe. It's just technobabble. )

Caritas - Sunday evening [Open]
Was Jolee ready for some football? No. But Tino was. Tino kept trying to get Jolee to play paper football for him in celebration of the NFL season. Jolee declined. But he did let Tino listen to the games on headphones.

The HELP WANTED sign was still up. And Jolee put the Christmas lights around it just to make it stand out even more.

[OOC: I'm around, but may be distracted at points while trying to clean up a little.

We currently have openings on Wednesday and Saturday. Jolee's preference is for adults to fill the spots, but students will be accepted with some muttering. I personally have no preference. I just like having Jolee be less than entirely happy. :D

If you'd like a job, e-mail or IM me and/or talk to Jolee.

ETA: One slot filled! Preference is definitely for an adult now, but Jolee will settle for a student. If you e-mail me to tell me that you're going to app Marion Ravenwood, I will hold the Saturday spot while you app her.]

Room 308, Sunday Night
Ella settled on her bed with a box from Mandy. It had arrived a few days earlier, but she had saved it until her actual birthday.

It contained a sack full of gooseberry turnovers (with a note saying they were kept fresh by magic), a bracelet made of sparkling blue beads, a sketch of Apple, and a new cookbook that Mandy grudgingly acknowledged in the dedication as "almost as good as my recipes, pet."

She'd also gotten a note from Hattie wishing her stepsister "would grow to be slightly less hideous this year," and a letter from Char with his best wishes and a question about .... well. An old joke, and an improper one at that even if it made her smile.

Her father, she was sure, would remember in a month or so, as he usually did.

But it was a good birthday, and she paged through the cookbook with berry-sticky fingers as she contemplated the art of being 16.

[OOC: Totally open.]

So, we just realized that this official announcement was never made. I blame Tropical Storm Hanna. *looks cute*

We have one last addition to the admin team to announce: Skylie, aka [info]berserkerminsc (and many, many others). Please be kind to her brain for a little while, as she has officially given us the last bits of her sanity. Mwahaha!

School Grounds, Sunday Evening
Claire had gone to the mainland and gotten good film, a tripod, and a few props that she hoped would make for a good and not-too-goofy unicorn shot.

She was trying not to bounce too much at the whole taking-a-unicorn's-portrait thing as she set up her equipment and watched for Jan, scouting out good lines of sight and light as she did so.

[OOC: Mostly for one, but open like a section of the school grounds that in no way thought it was the park a few moments ago!]

Fourth floor common room, Sunday afternoon
Well, she'd done the "antisocial" thing for a while, and observed people, and things. Maybe it was time to venture out into the common rooms.

When she got arrived, there was the matter of the television. It wasn't hard to get it to turn ON, or to figure out how to change channels or change the volume. Getting it to display something ENTERTAINING, on the other hand, seemed to be darn near impossible.

Agnes flopped onto the couch and sighed. "Oh, POOT."

The gym, Sunday afternoon
Jaina didn't so much mind not feeling rushed to go back to her room, because it could be a nice cover for spending some extra time in the gym. She was at the punching bag today, more working on making sure she sent it swinging hard enough than anything. After a while the chain's creaking sound got to be sort of soothing.

Yeah, that might be a sign she spent too much time here.
